Stripe Expands Services In Japan With Launch Of Terminal

Stripe has officially launched Stripe Terminal in Japan, aiming to help businesses unify their online and offline commerce experiences. The announcement came during Stripe Tour Tokyo on September 3, 2025, where the company also unveiled a suite of product upgrades, including AI-powered tools and support for stablecoins.
Unified Commerce With Terminal
Stripe Terminal allows Japanese merchants to bridge in-store and online sales. Key features include:
- Tap to Pay on iPhone support, eliminating the need for additional hardware.
- Integration with PayPay, Japan’s leading QR code payment method with over 70 million users.
- Support for Weixin Pay (WeChat Pay) to better serve inbound Chinese customers.
- The new Reader S710, which offers built-in cellular connectivity to keep payments running even without Wi-Fi.
One of the first adopters will be Inforich, the nationwide mobile battery sharing service operating in around 55,000 locations. CEO Yuuki Hashimoto highlighted Stripe’s global scalability, multilingual support, and developer-friendly environment as decisive reasons for adopting the solution.
Broader Expansion Plans
Beyond Terminal, Stripe announced initiatives to help Japanese businesses grow across Asia. These include:
- South Korea market entry support, with access to wallets like Naver Pay, Samsung Pay, PAYCO, and acceptance of all major local cards.
- Enhanced fraud protection with Stripe Radar, now featuring 3D Secure 2, which has improved authorization rates by 25%.
- Stripe Startups program, providing early-stage companies with financial benefits, resources, and a peer community.
Strong Growth In Japan
Stripe continues to see strong momentum in Japan. In 2024, payment volume on the platform grew by over 40% year-on-year, with cross-border transactions rising more than 62%. Subscription models are also on the rise, with over 9,000 Japanese businesses using Stripe Billing.
Stripe is also positioned to benefit from the rapid expansion of Shopify in Japan, where the platform is gaining strong traction among local merchants. As the company behind Shopify Payments, Stripe directly powers the gateway that 40.000+ of Japanese Shopify stores rely on for processing transactions.
Stripe already powers payments for some of the country’s most recognized brands, including Toyota, ANA Group, and ORIX. Globally, the company processes more than $1.4 trillion in payments annually.
