Shopify's POS now allows mixed delivery methods

Shopify just dropped a powerful update for retailers using POS—and it's all about making life easier for both staff and customers.
Say hello to "Ship and Carry Out", a new feature that allows store staff to mix delivery methods in one seamless order. This means customers can walk out with part of their purchase and have the rest shipped to their home—all in a single checkout.
Why This Matters
Before, if a customer wanted to buy a mix of in-stock and out-of-stock items—or split their purchase between take-home and delivery—it required separate transactions. Not ideal, right? Now, with Ship and Carry Out, that hassle is gone.
Here’s what’s new:
- Flexible delivery per item: Each product in the cart can have its own delivery method. Your staff can now process mixed orders quickly—some items are carried out, others are shipped.
- Sell more, sell smarter: This opens up new possibilities. Let’s say a customer wants an out-of-stock item—no problem. You can ship it later, while they walk out with what’s available now.
- Unified discounts and bundles: Everything’s in one cart, so bundle pricing and discounts apply across the board. It’s smoother for staff, better for customers, and more efficient for your store.
A Few Things to Keep in Mind
There are some technical notes to make sure everything runs smoothly:
- No splitting quantities of the same variant: If a product variant is part of a bundle and also added separately to the cart, both instances must share the same delivery method.
- Tax engine compatibility: This feature currently supports Avalara 2.0, Vertex, and registration-based tax engines (not available yet for stores based in the US, UK, or EU). ShopifyTax support is on the way, so keep an eye out.
- Shipping region limitations: All shipped items in the cart must come from the same tax region, unless you’re within the EU—thanks to the shared tax engine there, you can ship across countries.
- Email updates: Default email templates will now clearly show which items are shipped vs. carried out. If you use custom email templates, you’ll need to update those manually.
The Bottom Line
Ship and Carry Out is a game-changer for brick-and-mortar businesses using Shopify POS. It creates a smoother, more modern shopping experience and gives your team the flexibility to sell smarter, without jumping between separate carts or losing out on sales.
